Ecoactivism in Russia is one of the bright manifestations of a civic position. People are more willing to mobilize and unite when it is necessary to protect their native land and small homeland. Civil processes during “ottepel” and “perestroika” partly began with environmental protection. Today ecoactivists are more under attack than others. Physical protection, blocking of illegal actions of builders, duty points and tent camps – these are the basic tools of ecologists when we say about direct struggle for nature even under the threat of loss of personal freedom. Some activists had to emigrate, and some did not have time and get a real prison sentence. The film “Grassroots” examines three bright events of environmental struggle – in Karelia, Krasnodar and in the Voronezh region, and on their example the film answers the main questions facing environmental activists. We hear the voices of many of them and listen to the opinions of experienced environmental defenders: Evgenia Vitishko, Andrei Rudomakhi, Konstantin Rubakhin, Suren Gazaryan, Grigory Kuksin, Evgenia Chirikova, Tatyana Chestina and many others.
